Ethiopia dominates the Horn of Africa, the easternmost extent of the African continent, sharing borders with Eritrea and Djibouti to the north, Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south, Sudan and now South Sudan to the west. In terms of population, Ethiopia is second only to Nigeria among African nations, and the largest country without a seacoast. The Ethiopian landscape is extremely diverse, with everything from jungle to desert; some say that the Biblical Garden of Eden was located in this part of the world. In any case, some of the world's earliest civilizations have left their mark here; and somewhat more recently Ethiopia alone of African countries successfully resisted colonization by a European power.

Soccer is the national sport, but Ethiopians also have a passion for track and field events, being particularly renowned for the achievements in long distance running of athletes such as Haile Gebrselassie, holder of several world records. Golf, on the other hand, does not command much interest in Ethiopia, but there are two short courses in the capital city, which gives its name to the Addis Ababa Golf Club, with 9 holes; there are in addition 6 holes at the British embassy. A full-sized course is under development as part of a sprawling resort complex in the Legetafo region.
